Overview
- The Chair of Applied Geophysics at the Institute for Geosciences seeks the position of a Doctoral Researcher in Seismology, commencing at the earliest possible date. We offer a part-time position (75%, 30 hours per week), limited to 3 years.
Your responsibilities
- Determination of seismic attenuation in shallow subsurface layers using the spectral ratio method, utilising the ICDP Eger borehole seismometers
- Calculation of earthquake source spectra, moment magnitude and spectral stress drop using the radiative transfer equation
- Determination of frequency-dependent site amplification in the region’s station network
- Carrying out 3-D attenuation tomography (t* tomography)
- Processing and quality control of seismological data from the ELISE Large-N Experiment and permanent networks
- Publication of results in international journals and presentation at conferences
- Work on an own scientific qualification project, e.g. doctorate
Your profile
- University degree (Master’s degree) with a focus on geophysics, earth sciences with a specialisation in geophysics, physics or a comparable subject
- Good knowledge of digital time-series signal processing
- Sound knowledge of at least one programming language (Python, C, Fortran or equivalent)
- Knowledge of wave propagation, seismic attenuation or tomography would be desirable
- Good written and spoken English
- We expect you to be a team player with strong interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of German is an advantage, but not essential
